STONE
COUNTRY HOUSE

CONTEMPORARY

The Stone Country Home by Jesse Sahlani was designed to serve as a gathering hub for a large family. The it is set on in Oakville, ON, was the perfect size for Jesse to create a bungalow designed in the format of a micro-resort that feels connected in every way. What we mean when we give this description is that you feel a connection between every element of the home, and a consistent environment was achieved throughout the grounds. The result is a sprawling flow between interior spaces, symmetry that connects gardens and outdoor amenities, and a footprint that wraps it all with a backdrop of architectural significance.

Everything about this home is centered around the quaint charm of English Country Homes that we’ve seen throughout our travels through England. The rusticity of the natural stone and the way it contrasts stylistically against the large floor-to-ceiling windows throughout the exterior contribute to this body of work feeling both updated while offering a nod to the original renditions of this historical style. He similarly used the gardens to support this intention, focusing on a diverse range of species designed with traditional English splendor in mind.

The front facade gables were designed to feature similar proportions, serving to mask the garage doors as much as possible, with the roofline and numerous peaks distracting from them. Additionally, the front door gable wall is centered between two garden walls, creating a front courtyard that feels quaint and intimate. It is details like this that truly emotionally differentiate a body of work, as it plays an impactful role in how a viewer will feel when approaching this courtyard.

The rear façade was designed to offer views of the impressive landscape design plans from almost every room. Additionally, the creation of an “H”-shaped footprint similarly offers views of the architecture and exterior materials to each space as well. This approach is a favourite of Jesse’s when he has the space to do so. He considers a design of this form to be the pinnacle of master planning when seeking to wrap guests in the desired environment.

Upon entry, the proportions of the rooms themselves speak volumes and are an integral part of the interior environment, as Jesse sought to create a space that felt both cozy and visually impressive. To achieve this, the proportions had to feel out of the ordinary in the best way possible—proportions he was able to curate as a result of the single-storey format he developed the body of work in. Interior finishes are simple but elegant as a function of this approach, serving to visually characterize the space where it counts without stealing the show.

The kitchen and living rooms are positioned within the center of the rear courtyard and are connected to the outdoor amenity spaces through large accordion doors. When open, these doors completely dissolve the boundary between indoors and out, allowing the covered loggia and outdoor kitchen to serve as a seamless extension of the central gathering spaces. From this vantage point, you’re wrapped on all sides by intentional design—lush gardens, the pool house and cabana clad in matching materials, and a limestone-framed pool that acts as the focal point of the courtyard. Every sightline is curated, every material speaks the same language, creating an atmosphere that feels thoroughly planned and deeply connected.

The image on the right perfectly illustrates the seamless flow between interior spaces. Subtle visual separations create a sense of connection while offering a level of elegant distinction, making each area feel distinct without isolating the viewer or interrupting the sense of openness. It also offers a clearer understanding of the interior proportions Jesse developed for these single-storey spaces, where scale and layout work together to create a cohesive environment.

With this sentiment in mind, furniture curation and interior decor played a supporting role in maintaining the light, fresh, and airy theme, while introducing forms that complement the interior proportions and finishes. This step in Jesse’s process was key to tying everything together, ensuring cohesiveness and curation throughout.
