The Contemporary French Chateau was designed by Principal Designer Jesse Sahlani to offer a nod to the elegance of French Chateau architecture, though in a far more contemporary format than you would experience when traveling the French Countryside. He captured this character within his body of work through the reinterpretation of the classic characteristic details of this historically rich design style through a contemporary lens. To name a few, these grand homes are often characterized by a limestone exterior, symmetrical windows, and a steeply pitched mansard roof that neatly tucks behind the grand limestone facade. The result feels federal and refined in character, with intricacy hidden among a sea of natural limestone.

It may seem deceiving at first glance, considering the facade’s simplicity, but Jesse designed a wealth of masonry details that work together harmoniously to capture the desired character. The stepped window trim profiles are a great example of this, as he incorporated this slickly contemporary art-deco detail that continues to influence French design today. The window sill and header banding, as well as the top of wall parapet banding details, are also similarly simple, though they serve to draw the eye to the width of the structure’s proportions intentionally. The mortar joints of the limestone block were designed to be as thin as possible, creating the feel as if they were all blended together visually until you get up close and see the texture.

The French Chateau design style, irrespective of what nuanced stylistic classification you look into, is synonymous with the use of noble materials. This made the use of limestone cladding a must. The material features a luxurious hue that changes in different lighting conditions. It adds a visual complexity to the simple form and massing of this structure that is un-replicable. It also frames the symmetrical windows wonderfully, especially considering their starkly contrasting black colour. The result is that the home feels stylistically formal and authentically stylish because of the colour variation in this natural material upon first approach.
