Our travels through the Spanish countryside were filled with experiences of new, effortlessly rustic environments, beautiful landscapes, and natural settings that were influential to our understanding of creating a relaxing environment. Among all of this, we stumbled upon Mas de Torrent, and it ended up being a standout part of our travels.
If you know us, then you know we work on a pretty rigid schedule with mandatory travel breaks in between, a balance we have found necessary to keep up the pace of creation we try to maintain. Through this process, staying at unique boutique hotels along the way is a big part of both relaxation and gaining stylistic inspiration in short bursts. Each of these selected locations offers vast landscapes, sprawling grounds, historic architecture, and luxury amenities.
Set in the heart of Costa Brava, this 18th-century Catalan farmhouse features 38 rooms, a Michelin-starred restaurant, and a spa that is set amongst the gardens. The expansive views of the Spanish countryside, the clay shingle roofs, the classic cars, and the evening lighting were also parts of what made our experience here so special.
The arrival experience is defined by a long, winding driveway lined with olive trees, passing several curated gardens and low, wide structures set among them. The main structure, dating back to 1751, offers a touch of classic Spanish rusticity through its stone walls and deep, arched entryways. As you observe it, what is immediately apparent is the respect for the original materials. The restoration did not seek to scrub away the patina but rather highlighted the imperfections of the masonry.

The interplay between the rough-hewn stone, the warm of the terracotta roof tiles and the manicured gardens is what gives the property its authentic atmosphere. The connection to the landscape is equally well-considered. Cypress trees, olive groves, and lavender gardens create a soft, organic boundary that deformalizes the transition between the rooms and the surrounding countryside. We found exploring the gardens and grounds to be the most influential part of our experience, while the spa set among them was fantastic. Sculpted hedges, winding pathways, organized “bulbs,” and a range of other unique elements were well-kept, and almost every location throughout the grounds had a beautiful view of the surroundinging rolling hills and “organge” roofs in the distance.
Beauty comes in many forms, and each destination like this offers an entirely new format in which the grounds are laid out. Being exposed to this, understanding the local plant species and climate conditions, and experiencing the natural beauty that surrounds these destinations is nothing short of a pleasure that inevitably inspires our design process.
