Jesse’s love for design in all forms serves as a well of inspiration for his creative process. In the sculpture category, we hold English sculptor and artist Henry Moore in the same esteem as Constantin Brancusi and Auguste Rodin. For this reason it was only fitting that we share a few of our favourite works by Moore that Jesse finds artistically inspiring.

We have had the pleasure of visiting the Henry Moore exhibit in Montreal, the Henry Moore Sculpture Center at the AGO in Toronto, and two separate pieces in London: one at Kensington Gardens and another just outside the Houses of Parliament at Abingdon Street Gardens. Our favourite piece is actually set outside of the AGO in Grange Park (seen in the first image).

When we look at the evolution and history of modern sculpture, it is impossible to ignore the sheer proportional specificity and understanding of scale and form that Moore brought to the medium. He sought to create a dialogue between the solidity of the material and the landscape it inhabits, a philosophy that resonates deeply with us.

What most don’t realize is that Moore was a pioneer of the concept of “truth to materials.” Moore believed that the material itself should dictate the form. He avoided the temptation to force stone to look like soft flesh, instead allowing the hard, tense nature of the block to remain visible. This respect for the medium resulted in sculptures that feel as though they complement their setting.

To further this intention of integrating art with nature, Moore introduced the “void,” piercing the solid form to create negative space. By opening up these forms, Moore invited the surrounding lush greenery and topography to become part of the composition, ensuring that the sculpture never feels like an unobtrusive object but rather a curated extension of the grounds.
