Sculpture has always held a special appeal for us because of the unique artistic sentiment it brings into a space. There is something about introducing a distinct form into a room that achieves a feeling you simply cannot replicate through interior design or furniture selections alone. It is for this reason that visiting galleries across the globe has always been a favourite hobby of Jesse’s and mine. Today, however, I wanted to talk about a few of the galleries that have inspired us the most, though they do not come in the format you might expect.
Through our travels, we have come across many inspirational gardens that we have had the pleasure of touring during different seasons. Locations such as Cap Roig, the Palace of Versailles, Hidcote Manor and Gardens, the Musée Rodin, and Giardino Giusti stand out to me among so many others. During the summer months, each of these gardens is decorated with a range of unique sculptures throughout the grounds, and they become experiential and artistically intentional because of it.
We like to think of these spaces as live art galleries. There is a profound beauty found in the way the rigidity of a steel or stone sculpture is juxtaposed against the lush greenery that surrounds it. This contrast highlights the beauty of the art in a way that is rarely experienced in a traditional indoor setting. The coolest part about this outdoor gallery concept is the idea of using the surrounding form, or the lack thereof, to contrast the art piece at hand.
The integration of sculpture among specimens of plant species that have been sculpted to offer their own artistic form also creates a layered environment where these elements complement one another beautifully. It is a reminder that landscape design and fine art are not mutually exclusive, but rather partners in creating a cohesive visual story. We hope you enjoy the collection of shots Jesse and I took during our tours over the last few years.
I would say that some of our most nostalgic memories in the countries these gardens are set in were spent in these locations as a result of the experience these sculptures create. Their placement is often masterfully considered to highlight symmetry, draw attention to negative space, or frame a unique plant species. It creates such a beautiful contrast that it compels you to sit on the grass and spend a bit more time in that spot before leaving.
