THE PASSING OF A TORCH

Imge

We have the privilege of master planning the full redesign of a hundred year old Tudor manor in Bay Shore, NY, dating back to the 1920s. The existing structure was full of character, and we were mindful of preserving its integrity while passing the torch of its presence within the streetscape. This respect for the past shaped Principal Designer Jesse Sahlani’s approach, as he aimed to create a design that would honor the home’s sprawling width and aged character, while offering a sense grandeur within both the streetscape and canal views—elements that would define this charming neighborhood for the next hundred years.

It’s important to pay attention to the proportions of the structure’s massing. While these proportions break down into a range of complex peaks and dormers that are set at various heights, Jesse captured the estately character of this design style through their collective visual impact. It is through both these high level compositional elements such as the massing, along with even the smallest refining masonry details that Jesse is able to offer a nod to historic renditions of this stunning design style. More importantly, they support the design character that Jesse wanted to carry through every space throughout the grounds.

A BLEND OF OLD WORLD
CHARM AND NEW WORLD
CLASSICISM

CONTEMPORARY

To achieve his vision for the character of the home, Jesse chose a transitional design approach, blending old-world charm with contemporary classicism. Every exterior detail was carefully considered to contribute to a cohesive environment, setting the stage for a memorable experience upon entering the 2.5-acre waterfront grounds. The home’s stately facade showcases a perfect balance of symmetry and character. Crisp limestone cladding sets the tone for an enduringly timeless aesthetic, while steeply pitched gables and prominent red brick chimneys embody the spirit of classic European architecture.

DETAILS THAT COLLECTIVELY
CREATE AN EXPERIENCE

CONTEMPORARY

What we love most about this home is that no matter what part of the grounds you are in, you are surrounded by unique architectural design details, luxurious outdoor amenities, or lush greenery that is intentionally illuminated. The result is an architecturally interesting body of work that is derived not from fancy materials but from proportionality and character, an effect that is far more allusive than you might think. To draw your eye to this, Jesse designed a highly detailed masonry design plan that focuses on minimalism within the context of the desired design style, allowing the proportions to remain as the main event. The gable caps, arched window surrounds, full-limestone bay window, and the highly unique red brick chimney profiles are all great examples iof his design intention.

AN ENTRANCEWAY THAT
SETS THE TONE

CONTEMPORARY

Every entrance to both the grounds and the home itself were designed to set the tone for the experience a guest is about to have. The driveway, guarded by masonry walls and a sleek gate, is lined with layered gardens, and intentional lighting. As you progress up the winding driveway, you reach a front courtyard. At the heart of the exterior lies an exquisite entryway framed by stone detailing and subtle accent lighting. Oversized double doors provide an immediate statement, leading guests into an interior designed for refined living. The balance of scale and proportion ensures that the entrance feels both impressive and intimately inviting. Floor-to-ceiling steel-framed windows define the home’s aesthetic, flooding the interiors with natural light while offering uninterrupted views of the surrounding gardens.

A HIGHLY ARTISTIC RE-IMAGINATION
OF THE TRADITIONAL TURRET

CONTEMPORARY

Jesse’s highly contemporary reimagination of the traditional turret seamlessly integrates into the facade, introducing curvature that softens the gabled lines and lends a bespoke architectural element. He designed the floor-to-ceiling window within the space to be off-center, positioned to harness as much natural light as possible. On the interior, this special space was designed as a library, with a steel mezzanine bridge that crosses the windows path. The round composition of the space from the interior, as well as its size, makes this an inspiring space to work from.

LANDSCAPE DESIGN THAT TRANSCENDS ITS TRADITIONAL ROLE

CONTEMPORARY

The planting plans and landscape design features throughout the grounds of this manor were designed by Jesse to serve as an extension of the facade. They create a sense of lush softness that only English gardens could capture, as layered perennial gardens, sculptural trees, and curated layering frame the architecture in a way that changes a viewer’s perspective of the proportions. Elegant stone pathways and large potted plants anchor the entry points, ensuring a smooth flow from indoor to outdoor spaces. The exterior landscape design plan is a testament to his multi-disciplinary design process. He works through both the exterior proportions, interior proportions, interior layout, and the landscape design processes concurrently, balancing all of this alongside the findings of his initial sun study throughout his exploratory sketching process.

A HOME DESIGNED AS A MICRO-RESORT

CONTEMPORARY

The rear facade, landscape amenities, and auxiliary structure placements were selected with the intention of creating a rear courtyard that has a resort-esque feel. Every amenity is meant to feel connected to the surrounding harbour, while transcending indoor-outdoor spaces boundaries. The layout Jesse designed was approached with the intention of each amenity feeling “tangible” and within reach from one another despite the 2.5 acre sprawling nature of the lot its set on. To achieve this, gardens, ambient lighting, and the rear facade itself are designed to create this effect while characterizing the outdoor entertaining area with curated grandeur.

AN ENDEARING VICTORIAN DESIGN FEATURE

CONTEMPORARY

The Orangerie was designed by Jesse as a nod to the grandeur of Bay Shore’s past, incorporating this feature as a nod to the Victorian Era that shaped the design tastes of so many New York aristocrats. He incorporated this charming rendition of a sunroom feature into the kitchen of the home in order to create a highly unique breakfast bar that will serve as the backdrop to this family’s growth for decades to come.
