The Modern Forestview Compound was designed by Jesse to be an ultra-modern retreat that is designed for a unique 15 acre lot in King City. The proportions of this home were designed to feel “sharp” and “sleek”. In order to achieve the association of the finished product with these words by a viewer, Jesse designed a number of unique proportions, details, and lot planning features. The most important of which is the way he nestled the home into the grade, working with the unique topography of the property until the home feels like it was there before the surrounding foliage.

The driveway and backyard amenities tier downwards with the slope of the grade in order to ensure the home feels as if it was carefully placed there. However, this isnt the only feature that the composition of the home that was specifically designed to contend with the challenges the lot grading posed. Of course, Jesse used this feature to his advantage in order to tuck the garages out of the view of the front facade.

The window walls featured throughout close to 85% of the facade’s exterior walls is another design decision Jesse incorporated as a function of the lot’s composition for two reasons. The first is that this heavily wooded lot has a tree canopy that inhibits our ability to harness natural light into certain areas of the home at different times of day.

The curtain walls do a great job of combating this effect by transferring natural light between spaces. The second reason he designed these windows was because of the seclusion this lot offers. Its not often that you have an opportunity to design a home that has almost no privacy concerns.

The concept of viewing architecture as inhabited sculpture is a unique perspective Jesse brings into every private residence he is commissioned to design. A great example of this is the perspective view on your left. He designed the proportions of this home to feel expansive and out of the ordinary in the best way possible. He achieved this sentiment through the creation of overhangs that feel incredibly wide, spanning almost the full width of the home. The second-floor cantilever feature he created speaks to the refined geometric sense of modernity he sought to capture within his design. And while the rear facade offers an even more pronounced example of geometric modernity, the sculptural presence of the massing of this home is evident no matter what angle you look at it from.

The rear facade and landscape design plans really capture our client’s intention behind designing such an elaborate home like this: to support their active lifestyle, family fun, and entertaining. It also reflects some of Jesse’s best masterplanning work as it smoothly integrates a range of amenities that all feel tangibly connected.

The sense of connection you feel when in this space is nothing short of impressive, as Jesse uses the form of the massing, outdoor amenities, gardens, lighting, unique concrete features, and auxiliary structures to surround you with design intention. The sports court, pool deck, and outdoor dining area/lounge are all overlooked by the grandly modern main structure, characterizing the outdoor space with luxurious architectural significance. The feature we enjoy most is the single-storey proportion of the office lounge, as it extends outward from the facade of the two-storey structure, wrapping around the pool to create an exterior courtyard.

The backyard also tiers downwards at the rear, allowing Jesse to design the slickly modern recreation lounge and guest suite structure into hill. The two storey height of this structure is hidden for this reason, offering a subdued yet architecturally significant connection to the main structure without the same height and presence. This feature feels almost sculptural in the grand scheme of your surroundings, serving as an extension of the stylistic intent to another corner of the lot that is visible from multiple rooms within the main home.
