Modern Beach House

Our Modern Beach House project was a renovation/addition of a typical 1980’s subdivision house. The design of this uniquely modern home was created by Jesse to emulate a Malibu beach house with a light, airy, and sprawling interior floor plan that provides our clients with a luxurious and simple modern escape. When Jesse and John-Luke approach projects like this, the end result is intended to be of the same quality as a new custom home design while offering the efficiencies of utilizing what was, in this case, a very good existing structure to work from. Floor joists were raised to extend the ceiling heights, the front face of the house was squared off and added to, and the roof line was flattened, resulting in a dramatic transformation both on the exterior and interior, as well as a large increase in the overall square footage.

On the exterior, contrasting white and black stucco are softened by brazilian Ipe wood slats, and oversized windows allow for full views of the lush ravine that this plot of land backs on to. The windows, as always, are specifically positioned to harness natural light at different times of day into the rooms with the highest time of average use. Achieved using detailed sun modeling software, Jesse believes that harness as much natural light as the surroundings of each plot will allow is an important pillar of timeless design.

On the interior, a combination of light wood flooring, a grand two storey concrete fireplace feature wall, clean white walls and black contrasting windows makes this simple interior design plan feel fresh, bright, and airy. While the highly modern and architectural nature of the design plan is forefront, the accommodations and functionality this home has to offer is also impressive. This home is designed to support a family of 5, allowing four bedrooms plus a guest bedroom and bathroom in the basement for entertaining family and friends from out of town. The space was savily designed by Jesse to ensure that privacy and comfort was afforded to each guest by including an ensuite bathroom.
