Jesse’s Contemporary Georgian, designed for a quaint node of the beaches, offers a great example of the highly detailed design he has become know for. Centrered around the Georgian design style, the outwardly simplistic exterior with symmetrical features and natural stone create a time sense of regal elegance.
However, despite the perceived simplicity of the exterior, upon closer review you will find that Jesse’s approach was just as detailed as ever. Everything from the window proportions and mullion designs, to the unique masonry and chimney details he created contribute to the capturing of a timeless character within his rendition of this historic design style.
What won’t be apparent to most is that Jesse had the challenge of creating a three storey home that offers the sense of balanced proportionality he imagined. As he worked through the sketching process, the Georgian design style was the perfect fit. The use of symmetry allows him to scale the sizes of each exterior detail, influencing the perceived width of the proportions. It also allowed the masonry design to be the star of the show. The limestone facade is one of our favourite features of the home, offering a sense of formality and a yellow undertone that feels undeniably luxurious.
We think the shot on the left of the front door and oversized front window captures how these proportions feel to a visitor approaching the structure for the first time.
In his usual fashion, Jesse’s masonry designs are incredibly detailed with the intention of capturing a specific feeling. The design plan includes a range of unique profiles he created for the gable wall caps, mid-wall banding details, and panel inlays. The image on your right is a great example of how the side gable features create an intrinsic sense of historic value. These details play off of the vertical symmetry created by the windows, and many were designed to increase the perceived width of the home. The mixture of materials, profiles, and proportionality come together in one art form as the inspiringly timeless Contemporary Georgian.
On the interior, the foyer sets the tone with lime-washed paneling that softens the classic Georgian panel detailing. This was an intentional effect on Jesse’s part, as it gave him the breathing room to include a checkerboard stone floor, adding an elegant and eclectic contrast to the space. The sitting room to the right is framed with unique glass partitions that feature the same mullion design as the window at the front, creating a confluence between the exterior and interior design that feels natural. These partitions also allow light to transfer through the front bay window into the kitchen and living rooms.
“As you walk into the great room, the proportions shift in scale. A coffered ceiling and two-story kitchen volume, lined with windows, flood the main floor with natural light. To complement this, he designed the veined marble fireplace, framed by fluted wood detailing, to bring structure and texture without feeling heavy. His intention was to let the proportions of the space take center stage, using the materials to create a warm environment for family gatherings.
