Our stay at lucknam park hotel and spaOUR STAY ATLUCKNAM PARK HOTEL AND SPAA MASTERMIND OF GARDEN ARCHITECTUREOur stay at Lucknam Park was welcomed by a feature that set the tone for the entire experience. The tree canopy of the breathtaking one-mile-long driveway leading to this private residence–turned–boutique hotel and spa was nothing short of extraordinary, serving as the gateway to 500 acres of historic estate grounds. The home itself dates back to at least 1199 and includes five acres of formal gardens, equestrian facilities, and a helicopter pad.Remarkably, the treeline was once used to hide Spitfires during World War II, when the estate was requisitioned as an army base. Composed of over 400 lime and beech trees, it remains one of the estate’s most iconic and atmospheric natural features.AN EXPANSIVE GEORGIAN ESTATEWe admired the proportions and sheer expanse of this sprawling Georgian country home. Composed of several distinct structures that wrap around a central courtyard in a rectangular format, the rambling façade and elegance of this design style luxuriously define the setting. Standing in the courtyard, you’re surrounded by architectural detail, English stone, and climbing ivy.SPA AMENITIES: A MODERN TOUCH AMONG A SEA OF ENGLISH CHARMThe spa amenities are suavely integrated as a contemporary design element within a sea of English charm. The atmosphere is dreamlike, featuring a full glass ceiling, an indoor-outdoor pool, a modern restaurant wing, and distinctive gardens and water features that lead to the entrance.OUR MORNING STROLL THROUGH THE GROUNDSDuring our visit, we took the opportunity to walk the grounds of this stunning estate. The formal gardens were wonderfully experiential, offering a serene and luxurious feeling stroll through them. Structured hedges separate different areas, including a sculpture garden, rose garden, and walled garden featuring a range of local plant species. What stood out to us most was the way they let you know you were still on the grounds, even in the absence of more formal design features. The placement of sculptures throughout the grounds, all following a similar design language, was helpful in determining whether or not we were supposed to be there.
